Itinerary

Day One: South Coast

Pickup

Begin your adventure with an 8am pickup from your accommodation in Reykjavik

Seljalandsfoss

The first stop on our tour is the breathtaking Seljalandsfoss waterfall. During most of the year, you can walk behind the waterfall into a cave for a view from the back and the sides. The surrounding area is also home to a variety of plant life, including moss, wildflowers, and ferns that add to its majesty. Bring a rain jacket because this waterfall by far has the most spray!

Skogafoss

Next up is the mighty Skogafoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s largest waterfalls, with a drop of over 60 meters. Feel the power of this waterfall from close up but be ready to get wet the closer you get. The mist from the falls can create a beautiful display of rainbows on sunny days if you’re lucky. If you want a workout, climb up a nearby staircase to get a bird’s-eye view of the waterfall and surrounding landscapes.

Kvernafoss

Our next stop has us taking an easy 30-minute hike to the hidden gem of Kvernafoss waterfall. This waterfall is hidden inside a magnificent green canyon that is very close to Skogafoss but is often missed by travelers. This waterfall is also one that you can walk behind but the upside is that you will fortunately encounter far fewer people than at Seljalandsfoss.

Dyrhólaey

Next, we’ll visit the towering cliffs of Dyrhólaey, where you can see breathtaking views of the black sand beaches and some truly remarkable sea stacks and cliff formations. Keep your eyes peeled for puffins and other seabirds that nest in the cliffs in the summertime.

The Black Sand Beach

We will end our tour with a visit to Reynisfjara, a stunning black sand beach with towering basalt columns and sea stacks. The beach is also home to some fascinating folklore and legends, including the story of the Reynisdrangar sea stacks. You can also explore the nearby cave, Halsanefshellir, which has unique rock formations and provides a stunning backdrop for photos.

Overnight on the South Coast

After an epic day of exploring waterfalls and black beaches, you will check in to your cozy accommodation along the south coast, where you can relax and recharge for another day of adventure.

Day 2 – Thórsmörk Valley

Pick up from your accommodation at 9am

4×4 Drive into the Valley

Ride along in one of our super jeep 4x4s off-road and across rivers into Thórsmörk, a hidden valley surrounded by glaciers, mountains, and rivers

Gígjökull Glacier

We will start the day off by visiting the retreating Gígjökull glacier at the base of Iceland’s volcano, Eyjafjallajökull. There, you will learn about the devastating effects that the 2010 eruption of this volcano had on the glacier and how it has changed over the decade.

Stakkholtsgjá Canyon

As we make our way further into Thorsmork Valley, we will explore Stakkholtsgjá Canyon, a stunning gorge with towering green cliffs and a sparkling river running through it. Like something out of Jurassic Park, this place is guaranteed to make you feel small.

Hike to the Stakkholsgiá Cave

Hiking for about 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) into Stakkholtsgjá Canyon, we will reach a massive crack in the mountain which leads into a cave with a waterfall. This location is a true hidden gem within the valley and a perfect place for some great photos amongst the green canyon walls.

The trail is flat and very easy, however, may have you crossing some small streams in order to reach the cave. It’s best to have water-resistant hiking boots as well as a rain jacket for the spray of the waterfall inside of the cave.

Lunch at Langidalur Hut

After our canyon hike, we will have a picnic lunch at Langidalur Hut campground, a cozy mountain hut located within the lush greenery of the valley. With a view of the mountains and rivers, you will enjoy an assortment of sandwiches, Icelandic yogurt, fresh fruit, salads, and beverages.

Valahnukur Hike

Once again, we have saved the best for last. We will finish our day departing from the campground on a 2-hour roundtrip hike up Valahnukur peak for one of the best views in all of Iceland. This hike is rated as moderately challenging and can be steep in parts. With that being said, the trail is very well maintained with some benches along the way to rest at and enjoy the view. At the top, you will have a panoramic view of the surrounding glaciers, mountains, and valleys which makes for one of the best photo spots in Iceland.

Drop-off

We conclude this epic two-day adventure as we drive back to Reykjavik where you will get dropped off at your accommodation.

This two-day tour offers an exciting and unique experience to explore the stunning landscapes of the south coast of Iceland and the hidden gem of Thórsmörk, while also capturing unforgettable moments with a professional photographer by your side
