Tour Description

With the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland, this photo workshop is the first of it’s kind. Never before have you had the opportunity to capture fire, ice, and aurora on one single adventure. Join world renowned photographers, Cath Simard and Ryan Newburn as they lead you into crystal ice caves, next to molten lava, and underneath dancing aurora.

Spend one week traveling across Iceland where your 2 guides will lead you to the most photogenic spots in Iceland each day, teaching you complex in field shooting techniques and composition creation. Nights will be spent learning new post processing skills with step by step Photoshop and Lightroom tutorials or chasing the northern lights when the conditions become optimal. Both Cath and Ryan are also very accomplished NFT sellers and will be sharing their insight in an exclusive session revolved around successfully selling your artwork in the digital space.

A few of the highlighted locations on this tour include photographing Iceland’s newest volcanic eruption, Fagradalsfjall along with 2 private ice cave tours on Vatnajökull that your glacier guide, Ryan, will lead you into. Iconic locations such as Vestrahorn mountain, Diamond Beach, Glacier Lagoon, Skogafoss, and Seljalandsfoss will also be visited along with many hidden gems that your guides have discovered over years of living in and shooting Iceland.

Cath Simard is a Canadian-born photographer, digital artist and SONY Alpha ambassador with an instantly recognizable style that meticulously blends reality with her own imagination. Today, Cath leads workshops in places like Patagonia, Peru, Iceland & the Canadian Rockies. She wishes to inspire others to break out of their comfort zone & explore a world of endless possibilities.

Local Landscape Photographer & Glacier Guide

Ryan is a landscape photographer that has lived and shot all over Iceland for the last four years.  Originally moving from the US and becoming a glacier guide back in 2018, he founded Ice Pic Journeys for his passion of exploration and photography on the ice. His works have been published in National Geographic, Chizz Magazine, and Vivo Mobile. With knowledge of Iceland inside and out, Ryan will lead you to the most photogenic and secret spots in the country that exist and teach you the history behind them.


All itineraries will be flexible based off of where the best weather conditions are.

Day 1: Pickup from hotel in Reykjavik between 8 and 9am. Drive to Reykjanes sea stacks for morning seascape shooting. Lunch in Grindavik. Drive to Fagradalsfjall Volcano for hike to the lava fields and viewing hill to shoot sunset and into the night. If aurora is possible, shoot at volcano or sea stacks depending on strength and conditions. Hotel in Grindavik/Reykjavik for the night.

Day 2: South Coast Waterfalls- Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Kvernufoss, and some secret waterfalls. Dyrholaey/Black Sand Beach for sunset. Aurora hunting at Skogafoss. Hotel in Vik.

Day 3: Sunrise at Black Sand Beach/Vik. Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, Lómagnúpur, Skaftafell Viewpoint and Svinafellsjokull/Vatnajokull National Park for Sunset. Aurora Hunting around the glaciers. Hotel in Hof.

Day 4: Sunrise and Svinafellsjokull. Ice Cave/Glacier private tour. Diamond Beach and Jokulsarlon for sunset. Aurora hunting around Vatnajokull National Park. Hotel near Glacier Lagoon.

Day 5: Sunrise at Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. Eystrahorn Icelandic Horses, and Batman Mountain during the day. Sunset and aurora hunting at Vestrahorn. Hotel in Hofn. 

Day 6: Sunrise at Vestrahorn. Ice Cave and Glacier private tour. Diamond Beach and Glacier Lagoon for sunset/Aurora. Hotel near Glacier Lagoon. 

Day 7: Drive back towards Reykjavik. Secret Canyon hike and Fjallsarlon during the day. Goodbye dinner in Reykjavik. Drop off at personal hotels at 8pm for the end of the tour. 

What to Bring

Please note that Iceland’s Arctic weather in the wintertime can be calm in one moment and chaotic five minutes later. Being prepared with proper gear and clothing for all conditions can mean the difference in feeling comfortable or miserable when shooting.

Camera + Lenses– Ideally you want a wide angle, mid range, and telephoto lens with the first two being the most used. (Between all lens’s, covering a 15-200mm range is recommended)

Drone with extra batteriesNote: You will still be able to shoot all locations with regular camera if you don’t own one)

Accessories (recommended)– Tripod, CPL and ND Filters, extra camera batteries, memory cards, dry cloth, headlamp, and remote shutter release (will help you in any low light and/or bad weather conditions).

Laptop for editing sessions. Photoshop and Lightroom should be installed. 1-2 External Hard Drives to backup photos is also recommended. 

✓  Winter Clothing– Thick Gloves, Wool Hat, Wind/Waterproof Jacket and Pants, Hiking Boots (preferably water resistant) and warm layers for freezing conditions (wool is recommended). Proper layers should have one base layer shirt, a mid layer fleece or sweater, and an outer layer down or synthetic jacket. Also Long Johns (thermal underwear) are recommended. One set of casual clothing for the city.


Terms and Conditions

CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS: Ice Journey ehf. reserves the right to cancel any workshop for a minimum of 30 days prior to the workshop start date if our minimum enrolment specified for each workshop is not met. The enrolment minimum to run each tour is at least 6 people per workshop. Ice Journey ehf. is not, however, liable for any expenses incurred such as airfare, visas, or accommodation.

Refunds: The full amount is non-refundable unless/until we fill your spot. It is very difficult to fill a spot on such short notice. This means we would be losing money on an empty spot that could have otherwise been filled. It is highly advised that you purchase travelers insurance for this trip to cover any unexpected circumstances that can occur. 

Rescheduling: In the event that a workshop is rescheduled by Ice Journey ehf. at a later date, each participant will be offered to re-book or cancel. If you choose to cancel, a 250$ cancellation fee applies. The $250 helps to cover all subtractors non-refundable cancellations fees. Once you have confirmed the re-booking, regular Cancellations and Refunds Terms mentioned above apply.

No shows: You are responsible for arriving on time at the notified meeting point. Please make your greatest effort to show up on time. Arrive early if you do not know the notified meeting point. For any considerable delays in flights, please contact us at

COVID Policy: Due to the Covid Pandemic, it is your responsibility to figure out your country’s requirements and prepare them for entry/exit to and from Iceland. You book with the understanding of this and it being subject to change. Please also be aware that if you are not vaccinated fully, you may be subject to quarantine upon arrival in Iceland so it it important to give yourself the correct amount of time needed in order to do this.

In the event that your trip becomes impossible to go on due to your country or Iceland’s border restrictions for COVID-19, 30 days or less before departure (not pertaining to persons if only restriction is quarantine or requiring of vaccinations/negative COVID tests), you will be refunded 50 percent of your original payment. If the same circumstances apply more than 30 days before departure, you will be refunded 100 percent of your original payment minus a $250 transaction fee. 

Bad Weather and Volcanic Activities: Ice Journey ehf is not responsible for any forces of nature that occur during our trip. In the event of bad weather, group photo adventures will not be postponed. You are required to bring appropriate clothing to protect yourself from the elements. In the event that the Volcano or Aurora Borealis is not active during the trip, we will modify the itinerary and make sure we take this time to bring you to the most epic locations with this extra time. No refunds will be made due to bad weather, volcanic inactivity or aurora inactivity beings this is completely unpredictable.
