At the end of your tour, take home a photo package of your journey as a perfect memory and souvenir.
Itinerary
Pickup
Departure from Reykjavik will be at 8:00am. Your guide will pick you up from your hotel and start your adventure towards Iceland’s famous south coast where Katla Ice Cave is located.
Seljalandsfoss
The first stop on our tour is the breathtaking Seljalandsfoss waterfall. During most of the year, you can walk behind the waterfall into a cave for a view from the back and the sides. The surrounding area is also home to a variety of plant life, including moss, wildflowers, and ferns that add to its majesty. Bring a rain jacket because this waterfall by far has the most spray!
Skogafoss
Next up is the mighty Skogafoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s largest waterfalls, with a drop of over 60 meters. Feel the power of this waterfall close up. The mist from the falls can create a beautiful display of rainbows on sunny days if you’re lucky. If you want a workout, climb up a nearby staircase to get a bird’s-eye view of the waterfall and surrounding landscapes.
Lunch in Vik
Before setting off to Katla Ice Cave, you will make a stop in the quaint seaside town of Vik where you will have a lunch break at The Soup Company. This restaurant is quite famous for its traditional Icelandic soups and bread. A perfect meal to eat before heading into our next icy location!
Drive in 4×4 to Katla Ice Cave
After lunch, you will hop into our 4×4 super jeep and take a drive onto the Mýrdalssandur flood plains towards Katla, Iceland’s largest volcano. The ice cave that you will be traveling to sits underneath the glacier, Kaldaklofsjökull, which comes down from the top of Katla. This is because Katla is a sub-glacial volcano and is completely covered by ice. And more interestingly, the floodplain that you will travel on is created from the massive amount of meltwater that sweeps down the mountain when Katla erupts. This is a baffling fact to consider of the surrounding landscape as you are driven on the black ash-filled plain toward the ice cave for roughly 45 minutes.
Katla Ice Cave
Upon arriving at Katla Ice Cave, your guide will supply you with a helmet, headlamp, ice axe, and crampons before entering. They will show you how to put your gear on and go over a safety briefing before heading into the cave.
Entering the ice cave is always the biggest highlight of this tour for our guests. You will feel as if you are entering another world filled with crystal blue ice and deep black lines of ash across the walls of the cave. Capturing your most authentic smiles and awes will be our mission as you explore this wondrous place with a photographer by your side. We will spend roughly an hour and a half exploring the ice cave and the surrounding area before heading back in the super jeep to the next destination.
The Black Sand Beach
We will end our tour with a visit to Reynisfjara, a stunning black sand beach with towering basalt columns and sea stacks. The beach is also home to some fascinating folklore and legends, including the story of the Reynisdrangar sea stacks. You can also explore the nearby cave, Halsanefshellir, which has unique rock formations and provides a stunning backdrop for photos.
Drop-off
We conclude this epic adventure with a relaxing drive back to Reykjavik where you will part ways with your guide and get dropped off back at your accommodation.
Throughout the tour, your photographer will capture the beauty of the landscapes and the memories of your trip, so you can relax and enjoy the sights without worrying about taking photos. At the end of the journey, you will receive an edited photo package as a keepsake of your Katla Ice Cave adventure within 14 days.
