TOUR DESCRIPTION
This private tour takes you to the greatest show on planet earth right now, Iceland’s newly active volcanic eruption site, Litli Hrútur. Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Reykjavík and teach you about the eruptions short yet, extensive history as you make the drive towards the Reykjanes Peninsula. The hike to the volcano is always changing so the length and difficulty of the hike is yet to be determined. Pending safety updates, you will likely be able to spend 2-3 hours experiencing the warmth of the rivers of magma and breathtaking viewpoints of the powerful lava fountains.
Throughout this tour, your guide will also be your photographer. Meaning that they will take photos of you during all of these experiences. After the tour is over, we will edit and send them to you for you to keep as a memory of your epic adventure!
At the end of your tour, you will receive an edited photo package, ensuring your memories of this unforgettable day will last a lifetime.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The Hike to the New Eruption Site
It is extremely important to understand that the length to the eruption site is 9 kilometers each way (5.6 miles). The majority of this trail is on a recently bulldozed path which is relatively easy to walk on compared to last year’s volcanic eruption. However, the last 25% of the hike includes walking over uneven lava fields. While this path is being stomped down as more people visit, you can expect that this type of hiking will be rated as moderate to those with average fitness. We have hiked this trail and can confirm that someone of good physical fitness can do it in about 2 hours while someone of average fitness level can do it in 2.5-3 hours each way. If you or anyone in your group does not feel like you have the physical capability to walk at least 20 kilometers (12 miles) in a day, then you should not book this tour. Refunds will not be given to those who are unable to complete the hike.
What to Bring
It is also just as important for you to come prepared for the weather. This means having proper layers for any sort of weather. This includes rain pants, a rain jacket, a warm hat, gloves, hiking boots and enough layers to keep you warm if it were to start to rain. We do offer rain gear and hiking poles as extras that you can rent for either of these tours if you do not have them yourself. Also make sure that you bring plenty of water since there will be no sources of it for the entire trip to and from the volcano (so 8 hours roughly). We suggest, at a minimum, 2 liters. In regards to gas masks, these will come with your tour booking so there is no need to worry about that.
Tour Length
The length of both tour types will be 11-12 hours. This gives plenty of buffer time for slower groups/people. From Reykjavik to the actual volcanic site, you can expect a 1 hour drive followed by a 3 hour hike. Once at the eruption site, we will spend 2-3 hours (depending on group comfort) experiencing the warm lava and getting fantastic photos of you. Then after, you can expect another 4 hours back until you are finally dropped off in Reykjavik at your accommodation.
