ITINERARY
Meet Your Guide
Your Glacier Hike + Ice Cave Adventure begins at the Glacier Lagoon parking lot in Vatnajökull National Park. The official address is í Hornafirði, Jökulsárlón, Glacier Lagoon, 781 Höfn. You can also simply enter Ice Pic Journeys into Google Maps and we will appear.
:: Special Note :: Please keep in mind that this meeting point is a 5-hour drive from Reykjavík. We strongly recommend staying closer to the lagoon the night before.
Arrive at least 15 minutes early to use the restrooms, as there are none at the glacier. Your guide will be waiting in the bus parking lot across from the facilities—look for the Ice Pic Journeys logo on our 4×4 vehicle among the others.
4×4 Drive to Vatnajökull Glacier
From the lagoon, we’ll take a 4×4 vehicle towards the glacier. After about 10 minutes, we’ll turn onto a rugged F-road for a bumpy 20–30 minute ride across an ancient glacial plain. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating stories and history of the area.
The Crystal Ice Cave
At the glacier’s edge, you’ll be greeted by a vast cavern with a river running beneath it—the Crystal Ice Cave, also known as the Sapphire Ice Cave. Its shape, size, and location change every year, making each visit a one-of-a-kind experience.
Before entering, your guide will help you put on crampons and provide a full safety briefing. This is your chance to ask questions before stepping onto the ice.
Inside, you’ll be immersed in surreal blue walls and sparkling formations. Your guide—an expert photographer—will capture stunning images of you in the best spots, so you can relax and enjoy the moment. You’ll spend about an hour exploring the cave’s chambers, learning about its natural formation, and experiencing its ever-changing beauty.
Glacier Hike
Next, strap on your crampons and step onto Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier. Walking on ice is a truly unique feeling—you’ll soon get comfortable as you crunch forward behind your guide. Along the way, you’ll discover moulins (deep glacial holes), dramatic crevasses, and other striking ice formations. Surrounded by a barren, alien landscape, it will feel like you’ve set foot on another planet.
Crystal Crevasses
As you explore further, you’ll descend into a massive ice canyon—the crystal crevasses. The deeper you go, the bluer and more magical the ice becomes, until you find yourself in a world made entirely of crystal blue. This is often the highlight of the day and offers plenty of time to take it all in.
After about an hour of exploring, you’ll climb back up the slope and make your way off the glacier—knowing you’ve witnessed something very few ever will.
2-Hour Photoshoot at Diamond Beach & Glacier Lagoon
The adventure continues with a professional photoshoot at Diamond Beach, where icebergs glitter across the black sand. This is a perfect spot for stunning solo, couple, or family portraits.
We’ll then head to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where massive icebergs drift across icy blue waters. Your guide will capture breathtaking shots of you with one of Iceland’s most iconic backdrops.
Return to Glacier Lagoon
At the end of the day, we’ll drive you back to the Glacier Lagoon parking lot, where you’ll say goodbye to your guide and leave with unforgettable memories—and professional photos to treasure.

Please Note
- Participants must be in reasonably good health to embark on the tour they have booked. Pregnant individuals are not permitted on tours.
- Our standard age requirement for our Ice Cave tours is 10.
- Ice caves are a dynamic ever-changing natural phenomenon. Each year, old ice caves melt and new ice caves appear. Photos that you see of the cave at any given time on our website or any social media will not necessarily mean that is what you will necessarily experience on your tour. This makes each experience unique and special for our guests.
- This tour involves roughly 10km of total hiking. The first half of the terrain is very flat yet rocky and is relatively easy for a person of average fitness. The second half is hiking on the glacier which goes up a gradual incline for about 20 minutes. The overall hike is rated as easy with some areas of moderate exercise.
- Beware: It will be colder than you think up on the glacier. Therefore, it is very important that you have dress appropriately for our Glacier Tour. As it’s windy and exposed on the glacier.
- Photo packages may sometimes take more or less than 14 days to edit. This is just our average turnaround time.
